ZERO E-scooter sharing as a way of living, thinking and moving

Introduce yourself and the startup ZERO to our readers
My name is Wouter Moekotte and I co-founded smart e-mobility startup Zero. Before that, I have been active in sustainable entrepreneurship for over a decade developing & marketing biobased products with and

Why did you decided to start a business?
We believe business can be force for good and entrepreneurship can be a way to offer solutions to a market which doesn’t work well or can be improved significantly. New, private initiatives are not hindered or bound by traditional infrastructure or thinking and can offer innovative ways of solving a problem.

In the case of mobility in our cities it is clear there are too many cars and air quality is at sometimes dangerously high levels.

What is the vision behind ZERO?
Our goal is to support the development of vibrant inner cities, free of cars and pollution. To achieve this, we aim to make short-distance trips much more enjoyable by offering light vehicles such as e-bikes and e-scooters, available to anyone and everywhere in cities. More and more people live in urban areas and the air quality is posing serious health issues.

We have become very dependent on cars in city centres, which is not needed, and we strive to be one of the initiatives to replace cars and pollution.

From idea to start, what has been the most challenging and how are you funded?
Very challenging is almost always to find the right co-founders and assemble a good team around the initial concept. Besides a good personal bond there needs to be a complimentary skillset and the right timing for everyone to commit to a new venture. We have funded the company with own money and talk to investors to raise money to scale up.

Who is the target group of ZERO?
Young, urban professionals who increasingly use mobility as a service (MaaS) and don’t need to own a car or even bike. We cater to users who want to contribute to cleaner air in cities and desire a flexible and fun mode of transportation.

How does ZERO work? What are the advantages?
ZERO works very easy and straightforward. Simply download the app, locate a nearby scooter, unlock with QR code and start riding. Because it is ‘free-floating’ the scooter can be picked up and parked anywhere in the service area, provided it is left at designated parking spots.

The advantage is that you pay by the minute, have a great last mile mode of transport, and are not dependant on expensive parking space.

Where do you want to go with ZERO? Where do you see yourself in five years?
We strive to become a Pan European provider of sustainable, flexible modes of transportation based on mobility as a service. To offer a diverse fleet and cater to a large audience making new, light electric vehicles accessible to everyone.

Finally: What three tips would you give aspiring entrepreneurs along the way?
To not give up on your goal and vision. Don’t try to do everything yourself and seek help and advice of experienced people in developing the business.
