Worklean  is a collaborative, unified and smart workflow tool for startups

Please introduce yourself and your startup Worklean to our readers!
My name is Dr. Oliver Waldburg. I live in Frankfurt. I am happily married and have five children. In my free time I solve chess problems and write children books (first hopefully to be published in 2018).

I started my professional carrier in 1999 as a lawyer. I have been at the international law firm Allen & Overy LLP for more than 17 years and for almost 12 years as a partner. After so many years I decided to become an entrepreneur and start something new before I turn 50.

My startup is called Worklean. Worklean  is a collaborative, unified and smart workflow tool for startups Worklean helps startups to store all their business documents in a structured workspace and to share and communicate about these documents internally with the co-founders and the team, but also externally with shareholders, potential investors, tax advisors, lawyers. Smart templates such as legal checklists for startups or a due diligence checklists help startups to accelerate the digitization of the business documents to have them all in one place.

How did you get the idea to Worklean?
The idea for Worklean was born while I was working as a lawyer for more than 17 years. . I always felt that the document management was an issue which could be solved better than it was. The tools currently available cover some aspects but are not designed to the needs of a startup in terms of ease-of-use, pricing and flexibility. During my career as a lawyer I got to see many dataroom tools which are very expensive and are only used for investments and M&A cases. Talking to many startup founders I realized that most of them use Dropbox or Google Drive, but many of them have the problem to structure them correctly in one place and especially to start an communication on the business documents in a very simple way just like on Trello.

How difficult was the start and what challenges you had to overcome?
The start was definitely not easy. The main challenges were to set up a team (We’re hiring!), to understand the startup and technical processes after working more than 17 years as a lawyer. Before starting the beta which we just started (Please feel free to register as a beta user on www.worklean.com) it was a challenge to prioritize the features to be developed.

Who is your target audience?
Our sweetspot are startups. We believe that startups need one centralized digital workspace where they can store and share all their business documents and start to communicate on them internally and externally in an very easy way. We offer checklists and templates for free covering legal issues such as founding a company, having a shareholders meeting, communicating with the tax advisor, onboarding new employees. We also have a due diligence checklist which can be used by any startup to structure the business documents from the very early days of a startup and not when the first investment is right ahead.

What is the USP of your startup?
Worklean covers all business relevant aspects of the everyday life of startup founders in terms of document storage and smart communication. It really helps to structure the workflows of your business and to store and share documents with shareholders permanently.

Can you describe a typical workday of you?
When I do not travel to meet customers I usually start around 9 am, after I took my two small kids to the Kindergarten. In the morning I work on the tasks which I have identified in the evening before and I check all KPIs and whether there are any new opportunities which can be pursued.

Around midday early afternoon I typically have conference calls or hangouts or face-to-face conversations with the technical team and other team members to work on the sales and marketing strategy.
Around 6 to 6.30 pm I leave the office. Between 6 to 9 pm is family time and thereafter comes a wrap up of the day to plan the next day.

Where do you see yourself and your startup Worklean in five years?
In five years Worklean will be the preferred digital platform for document storage and communication for startups. Many startups will be happy to use Worklean in the everyday life of their startup.

What 3 tips would you give other startup founders on the way?
It is never too late to start your startup. I am turning fifty in January 2018.
Choose the right people you want to work with.
