SupplyNow is an ed-tech startup that supplies teachers, cover supervisors and teaching assistants to UK schools on a temporary basis. We guarantee that supply teachers and teaching assistants using the SupplyNow will receive the best pay rate in Kent and Surrey, and soon London. We can do this as we dont have large overheads, such as offices, consultants and commissions to pay.
How did you get the idea for SupplyNow?
Supply teachers are notoriously underpaid, with the traditional agencies often taking a large margin rather than the money going into the pocket of teachers. The team at SupplyNow have been working with supply teachers for years, and the feedback is always that the worst part of the job is the pay. We wanted to find a solution to teachers not being paid enough and schools being charged hidden fees and agency commissions. That’s why we’ve committed to our FairPayNow Guarantee. We believe that tech can make the whole process more efficient and leave more money with schools and teachers.
How difficult was the start and what challenges you had to overcome?
The biggest challenge has been finding great supply staff, they have a loyalty to their agency as they have often worked with the same agency for many years and they think there is a catch with what we are offering. There really isn’t, with the app the supply staff set where they will work and what they will cover and there is no bias involved in the matches. They can then see all the vacancies and pay rate. We find that once vetted and using the platform we get the best feedback.
Who is your target audience?
Our target audience is all supply teachers, cover supervisors and teaching assistants in the UK. Currently we’re focusing on Kent and Surrey, as we know these regions the best having lived and worked there. We’ve got plans to expand into London very soon.
What is the USP of your startup?
Our FairPayNow Guarantee is definitely a unique feature of our app, it ensures that supply staff ‘SupplyHeores’ will always receive the best pay rate, whilst schools will no longer have to pay any hidden fees or commissions. We are keeping the money in the supplyheoroes’ pocket. The app connects qualified and fully vetted supply staff directly with schools. The schools simply post an open role on the app, we then notify our SupplyHeores that match best on location, qualification and pay rate. They then chose which role they would like.
Can you describe a typical workday of you?
It starts bright and early as we know supplyheores and schools are early birds. We often spend first thing talking to the schools about vacancies. The morning is typically spent speaking with the supply staff that have signed up overnight, and then following up with referees as we like to ensure we have vetted our supply staff within 72 hours where possible. The afternoon is usually spent talking and meeting with schools to ensure that the bookings are on as soon as possible and what they may need staffing wise in the coming weeks. And then early evening until about 8pm we are usually speaking with the supplyheores again about how things went, as well as talking with new heroes that are keen to understand how they can join SupplyNow.
Where do you see yourself and your startup SupplyNow in five years?
With a solid market share and for all teachers and schools using SupplyNow as the default choice for connecting with supply staff and teaching assistants. We want to have completely cut out traditional brick and mortar agencies within five years.
What 3 tips would you give other Start-up founders on the way?
Ask for help, I have been so impressed with the amount of help and advice that other more experienced start-up founders have been prepared to share.
Share the lows as well as the highs, I have learnt to recognise that one bad day doesn’t mean you are failing.
