RaterFox, a social platform for movies, series and games

Please introduce yourself and your startup RaterFox to our readers!

My name is Jake Prins and I am the founder of RaterFox, a social platform for movies, series and games. After releasing a new website and a popular Chrome extension last year we have now launched the mobile app for iOS and Android. It lets you and your friends explore new products. Share reviews, create lists and get real recommendations from real people.

How did you get the idea to RaterFox?

I’ve always loved watching movies/series and playing video games. But because of a busy lifestyle and a huge amount of products out there, I didn’t want to waste my time on watching a bad movie or buying a game that’s not fun. There are many website who can help you make better decisions, but the best recommendations come from friends. From the people you know.

So I simply wanted to built an app that allows you to easily recommend things to others. This idea started to grow and became a social platform that allows users to connect with friends and not only recommend them, but also create their own lists, write reviews, watch trailers, join discussions, discover new products, rate them and many more.

How difficult was the start and what challenges you had to overcome?

RaterFox started out as just a website, which I built myself, but as I became a better developer and new features were being added, it came to a point where I had to decide that it was necessary to redesign and rebuilt the entire application. This took a lot of time, but in the end it made the application so much better.

There were many other challenges, but I’ve always tried to be patience and look at the positives from it. Always asking the question “What can I learn from this?”. If it has contributed to making a better product, or to my own personal development, then it’s worth the time and hard work.

Who is your target audience?

Anybody who like movies, series or games.

What is the USP of your startup?

The best recommendations do not come from critics or strangers, but from the people you know. Unlike many competitors, RaterFox has a strong focus on the social aspect and wants to connect people who share a same passion.

Can you describe a typical workday of you?

Since I’m the creator of the platform, I spend a lot of time coding. From building new features, redesigning old one to fixing bugs. I’m involved in every aspect of the process. I start the day answering some e-mails, then maybe post something on our social media channels, and then I’ll be writing a lot of code to keep improving the product.

Where do you see yourself and your startup RaterFox in five years?

I’ve always believed in long-terms visions and goals, but I learned that it’s way more important to focus on what you can do right now. There are a lot of ways to learn, to improve and and to grow in upcoming years. But because nothing really goes as expected, I don’t look that far ahead anymore. Where I am in 5 years? Who knows.

What 3 tips would you give other Start-up founders on the way?

Be patience and keep learning.

Focus on how to provide value.

Nobody cares. Work harder.
