I founded Meritocracy 3 years ago, along with my co-founder Riccardo Galli, immediately after graduating in Economics. Before working together, we lead great associative experiences at University. This allowed us to improve soft and organisational skills.
Meritocracy is a marketplace that allows Professionals to virtually visit Europe’s most innovative Employers, discovering unique insights about their daily life and recruitment habits through professionally-produced content (pictures, video interviews) and data intelligence.
Our business is based on recruitment: we automate the workflow of a Recruitment Agency, providing our Clients real-time pipelines of matching Professionals, ready to seize their new career opportunity. Our ultimate aim is to create the most rewarding and insightful job seeking experience online.
How did you get the idea to Meritocracy?
We founded Meritocracy because we didn’t like the way Professionals could look for a new job online: job boards fail in providing great content and information about the Employers, preventing talented people to understand in depth why should they join a specific Company.
How difficult was the start and what challenges you had to overcome?
The start has been really tough: I think that the most difficult challenge, when dealing with a crowded market as the one of online jobseeking, has been to focus punctiliously with our value proposition towards jobseekers and Companies. We needed to design our business model “as an orchestra”, taking in consideration all stakeholders’ needs at the same time. In so doing, we had to differentiate profoundly from competitors and be consistent with our Clients’ online behaviour.
Besides that, being based in Italy, we had the necessity of looking the scenario abroad from the beginning, testing the product with different attitude and markets.
Who is your target audience?
From the jobseekers side, we focus on Professionals (2-8 years of experience) in the “tech/digital” segment (i.e. from SEO specialist, to developers, software engineers and product managers).
As well, from the Employers side, we carefully choose the Companies to work with, targeting the most innovative – often VC-backed – digital/tech Companies.
What is the USP of your startup?
Job boards provide Companies with longlist of unqualified Candidate, with no screening tool and often with low matching rate. Recruitment agencies provide Companies with a shortlist of matching candidates, ready to be interviewed, usually taking 20 days. Meritocracy provide Companies real-time shortlists of matching Candidates, ready to be interviewed at 1/3 of head hunter cost.
Can you describe a typical workday of you?
As a product manager, I work side-by-side with the Dev Team to understand features development, prioritize tasks to fulfil our ultimate vision.
As a co-founder, I need to have an overview of all variables of the Company, keeping everyone motivated to our objectives.
Where do you see yourself and your startup Meritocracy in five years?
As the Company complexity will increase, as a co-founder, I will oversee the Product Development, taking the precious opportunity of learning from the work of senior managers and professionals that will take in charge the more operative side.
Meritocracy will be the ultimate destination for young Professionals to find their next career step in an insightful and informative way, across Europe’s most innovative Companies
What 3 tips would you give other Start-up founders on the way?
Analyze the market carefully: don’t limit to gut feelings, but look for numbers. When you’ve done, prioritize tasks to obtain a minimum viable product that can address the problem you’ve recognized and only that.
Get out of your building, to collect feedbacks. But then go back home, avoid everything that could distract you and focus only on your value proposition and your product.
If you have the right product fit, operations will then come much easier.
Create a great advisory board, collect people with experience in your industry and offer them a way to grow together.
