From Google and Cyborgs to Game of Thrones

Unbridled excitement at the CODE_n new.New Festival

From September 20-22, high-caliber experts will be discussing the latest technology trends with digital pioneers, trend setters and decision-makers

“It’ll be a thrilling mix,” says Ulrich Dietz, initiator of CODE_n and CEO of GFT Technologies SE. From September 20-22, the Center for Art and Media (ZKM) will host the first CODE_n new.New Festival in Karlsruhe – an international event dedicated entirely to the subject of innovation, which will inspire visitors with the latest technologies. Over three days, CODE_n will offer a comprehensive program on six stages, international speakers, space for inspiration and exchange, impressive business models from up-and-coming startups and digital media installations. The former head of the Federal Intelligence Service, Dr. August Hanning, for example, will speak about the mystery of cyber-security, while bio-hacker Hannes Sjobald will report on his cyborg activities. Christoph Keese, Executive Vice President of Axel Springer, will talk about his insights into Silicon Valley, while Armin Pohl, who’s agency won the Emmy Award for his visual effects in Game of Thrones, will deliver a keynote speech on the perception of reality in the digital age. In the evening, DJs, bands and cultural highlights will provide a host of entertainment. The festival will end with a concert by the successful electro-pop band Claire at Karlsruhe Castle, starting on September 22 at 8 pm.

“In the former munitions factory, we are creating the space needed for digital on-trend topics and inspiring people with new technologies. Innovation combined with avant-garde media art – that’s unique in this form,” continues Dietz. The four startup worlds, workshop areas and six stages will be showcased in five light-filled, 15-meter-high yards. Established companies from a range of industry sectors, political institutions and initiatives will bring trends and technologies to life. The German Federal minister Johanna Wanka acts as patron for the new.New Festival. The festival atmosphere extends way beyond the 11,000-square-meter event grounds too. Concerts, workshops and pub crawls are being held at various locations across the city. The highlight of the cultural program will be the “Schlosslichtspiele”, where international artists will illuminate the walls of Karlsruhe’s Baroque castle with light projections to create a truly fascinating spectacle. CODE_n startup competition: 385 entrants from 40 countries – 52 startups in the final

The 52 most innovative companies from eleven countries have made it into the final. Representing the four clusters “Applied FinTech”, “HealthTech”, “Connected Mobility” and “Photonics 4.0”, they are all vying for the CODE_n Award, which comes with a prize fund of Euro 30,000, and are eager to inspire the festival audience with their business models. The panel of judges will announce the winner at the Award Show on the evening of September 21 at 6:30 pm.

Something for everyone – the highlights of the conference

The contest cluster is a common theme throughout the program: Every topic has its own Side Stage in the startup world. Industry insiders and founders will be offering the latest insights in panel debates, keynote speeches, presentations and pitches. The event will also focus on discussions and interactions with the audience. The startup worlds will also form the focus of the conference on the Innovation Stage. On September 20, HealthTech will top the agenda (3 – 4:40 pm). Connected Mobility (12:40 – 4 pm) and Photonics 4.0 (4 – 5:40 pm) are scheduled for the following day. Applied FinTech (2 – 4:40 pm) will take center stage on Thursday.

65 speakers and more than 100 sessions are already lined up – e.g. TEDx speaker Jonathan Tilley explains what creativity actually means (Tues, 4:40 pm). Further speakers include Dr. August Hanning (Tues, 11:40 am – 12:20 pm) and Hannes Sjobald (Tues, 10:20 – 10:40 am).

The Photonic Strategy Summit 2016 will commence at 10 am on September 22nd, organized by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. TRUMPF Vice-President Dr. Peter Leibinger will launch the forum with a fascinating keynote speech on tomorrow’s world of photonics. Impressive speeches will then follow from Christoph Keese (11-11:20 am) and Armin Pohl (11:40 am – 12 pm). In the afternoon, photonics experts will join festival visitors in the Cube to talk about the agenda for research over the next few years – so it’s worth stopping by for a visit.

At the FinTech Talk from GFT on September 21 (4 – 6 pm), experts will discuss how they are shaping innovation processes in the financial sector to get new solutions out onto the market quickly. Joining GFT will be Deutsche Bank, FinTech figo and the CyberForum.

Touch and experience technologies live – in the Innovators Area

Painting in 3D? No problem, thanks to virtual reality. Google is presenting exciting digitalization formats, such as the brand new Tiltbrush VR Experience. Festival visitors will be able to learn for themselves just what’s already possible today. With the electric Streetscooter, our partners HPE, GFT, TRUMPF and Vector Informatik will be showcasing cross-industry future scenarios for convenient processing. Moreover, EnBW will be providing a glimpse of the networked city of tomorrow with its multi-functional SM!GHT streetlamp. However it’s also worth taking a detour to the virtual operating theater at the B.Braun booth, where the present and future of the HealthTech world will be on display. GFT will be portraying the innovation process for the financial world on a 2 x 5-meter LED floor, enabling visitors to playfully walk through the five phases. And if there’s anyone still using cash out there, they should try out the mobile payment app on the giant smartphone.

Accenture is also emphasizing the benefits of technology. For this reason, “The Holocube” installation has been created especially for the festival, challenging three-dimensional imagination and design skills in the context of a virtual reality experience. With data glasses, the consultancy firm is also demonstrating how the work of engineers is already being made easier during the maintenance and manufacture of complex machinery. Quality squared? At first glance, this colorful cube is merely an eye-catching object. But as visitors approach the Augmented Reality Cube more closely with their smartphone or tablet, whole new worlds await them.

For those who do not want to go home empty-handed, a trip to Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) may well be a good idea. They are creating a 3D image of the visitor which TRUMPF is welding onto a small piece of metal. HPE is also bringing virtual reality, industry 4.0 and connected cars to life. An IoT platform, forexample, will demonstrate how cars are able to communicate with each other.

Join in and discover new things – in workshops and sessions

The Exit Games by TRUMPF are all about creativity and team spirit: find tracks, combine clues and use your own intelligence to solve the thrilling mission.
On September 21, GFT will also be showcasing the latest product development method from Silicon Valley: Seven startup teams can apply for the Google Design Sprint Workshop in advance, which includes prototyping and validation with real users.

What exactly is happening with digitalization in the energy industry? At the EnBW booth, there will be answers to this question as well as numerous workshops, discussion panels and pitches relating to the networked city of tomorrow (Tues), electro mobility (Wed) and big data (Thurs). The debate will also cover how a sustainable infrastructure can make life in the city easier, safer and more environmentally friendly.

Thinking about products and applications from the user’s perspective – this is the approach taken in the Design Thinking Workshops organized by Accenture. People interested in attending the sessions that are being held several times a day can register at the Design Thinking Area next to the Accenture booth.
